FEATURED WINE
Chateau St. Jean de Lavaud, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux '04
The first thing you will notice about the label, beyond the nice line drawing of some vignerons, are the numbers 1.1, meaning the total area of the vineyards of this estate in hectares. In acres this equals about 2.5. This is smaller than the lawn my wife requires me to keep perfectly groomed all summer, and only slightly larger than some of the trophy houses going up around here lately. It is not enough land to make a living as a winegrower, and Isabelle Motte, owner of Chateau Vieux Maillet in Pomerol, knew this even before she bought this remarkable vineyard. The perfect soils, drainage and exposure for growing merlot don't come around very often, and when they do, it's a smart winemaker who understands not to mess around with mother nature. Isabelle decided , after purchasing this gem, to bottle the wine separately, under the label of the previous owners, who had made the wine for generations. At a total production, in a good year, of 500 or so cases, this will never make her a profit, but the soul of a vigneron is not always concerned with rewards in this lifetime.
The wine, from an outstanding vintage, is dark and deep, with plummy, smoky, black cherry and cassis notes, a silky middle, and a long finish for one so obviously destined for a long, long life. It really is a shame to drink this wine so young, but its just too yummy to let go, and with a total allocation to the state of Vermont of just a few cases (okay, I took home a couple of bottles to age) it would behoove you to join in with a bit of wine infanticide, especially with a lamb rack or a duck in front of you. I can't state just how strongly I love this wine, and what a spectacular bargain it is.
